The School of Higher Education Limited (SHEL) had humble beginnings, renting space from Presentation College with an enrollment of twenty students. We gained accreditation from the Association of Business Executives (ABE) in London to provide tuition for the ABE Business Administration Programmes. Our very first year of operations saw us produce a phenomenal success rate of 98%.
In 1999 SHEL relocated to the Birjah building on Broadway and in a short time expanded from two classrooms to six. The school’s portfolio also expanded with some of our clients seeking in house training for their companies. SHEL’s focus now included management development and thus began our endeavours in the arena of short seminars and courses ranging from computer based solutions to Logistics to Project Management.
SHEL’s affiliation with ABE continued to grow and in 2000 we were granted accreditation to run the ABE Business Information Systems courses. By this time the school’s scope and vision had outgrown its premises. Keith McDonald, Executive Chairman, recalls, “We were located on the fifth floor of the building and had limited parking facilities for students. I challenged my coworkers to find us a new location.”
In 2003 SHEL found its southern home at #18 Rushworth Street, San Fernando. Growth continued at a constant and rapid pace as the school was accredited for the Practitioners Diploma in Human Resource Management. SHEL also gained the Caribbean accreditation for the world prestigious and internationally recognized Heriot-Watt University's range of Bachelor of Arts Degrees.
In 2007 SHEL became a Heriot-Watt University School of Built Environment approved learning partner. In 2009 the Australian Institute of Business (AIB) formerly known as the Gibaran Learning Group accredited SHEL to run BBA and MBA programmes in Generic, Entrepreneurial Management, Logistics & Supply Chain Management and Human Resource Management. In 2010, the BBA Tourism and Hospitality Management were added to our AIB offerings as well as the MBA programmes in Marketing and Finance.
SHEL is moving into its 14th year of operations and continues to grow from strength to strength
in the quality of programmes we offer our students and our brand of unique practicality. Keith McDonald, SHEL principal, states: “We did not follow the usual school model of building big compounds and waiting for students to fill them. We brought in strong programmes, relevant to the market. Our programmes attracted the students and the infrastructure caught up.”
